People who are fond of Bollywood movies should be well aware of this place called AGRASEN KI BAOLI. Today I am going to share my recent visit to one of the historical place named Agrasen ki Baoli situated at heart of City, New Delhi.

The Place is located at Barakhamba Road, Cannaught place, Delhi. Being Delhihite, number of times, I visited Cannaught place and have thought of visiting this amazing historical place.

One fine day, while roaming around on C.P streets, me & few of my very close friends have planned to visit Baoli. We knew it’s in C.P but never knew that it is was barely 5-minutes away, hidden amongst trees, lies at the magnificent stone structure of Agrasen ki baoli.

Agrasen ki Baoli , designated a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India. It is a 60-meter long and 15-meter wide historical step well on Hailey Road near Connaught Place, New Delhi.

THE ORIGINS OF AGRASEN KI BAOLI

The design of Agrasen Ki Baoli point at late Tughlaq (1321-1414 AD) or Lodi (1451-1526 AD) architectural style. However, according to popular legend Agrasen Ki Baoli (which means the Stepwell of Agrasen) was built by Maharaja Agrasen or Emperor Agrasen.

STORY BEHIND

Baoli (also called bawdi in Hindi) is an elaborate well with steps leading down to the source of water. Baolis also played the role of community places where people, especially women, could get together.

There are stories that Agrasen Ki Baoli is haunted. These stories have only added to the popularity of Agrasen Ki Baoli and given it a place in the numerous lists of the top haunted sites in India.

DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURE

According to Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Agrasen Ki Baoli measures 58.52 metres x 13.71 meters at ground level. It has been constructed by putting together uneven stone units, usually called ‘rubble masonry.’ The monument is divided into four levels with a flight of 108 steep steps leading down to the well.

FILM SHOOTING

The shooting for many famous Bollywood film shooting is done at this place. Remember PK – Agrasen Ki Baoli was made famous in 2015 by Aamir Khan and Anushka Sharma’s Bollywood flick PK. The baoli becomes a shelter for PK.

Shubh Mangal Savdhan (year 2017) shot at Agrasen Ki Baoli Sultaan (year 2016) starring SALMAN KHAN was also shot at this famous historical place.

  2. I love reading about monuments and visiting historical monuments. Have lived in Delhi for little more than a year, and I do visit once a year but have never visited ‘agrasen ki baoil’. Shall visit next time I’m in Delhi.

  3. Of late, I have heard a lot about this Bawli in Delhi. Od late, many bloggers have posted about their visit to this ancient site. We too have a popular baori here in Jaipur – Panna Meena Baori

  4. I am yet to visit this place. Born and brought up in Delhi I was also unaware of this place until Filmmakers showcased it in their films and it became so famous. Recently MOM movie was also shot here.

  6. I finally visited the baoli this May!! It was quite surprising how it survived amidst the concrete jungle! Did not know that there was a scene from Sultan that was shot here.

  9. This has been on my wishlist ever since I have watched it on so many movies. I have been to Delhi twice but this place was never on my list.

  10. I didn’t know it was so close to CP. I am definitely going there soon. I remember it as the place of PK. Moreover since my hometown is close the Agrasens’s capital, Agroha, I’m more inclined to visit 🙂
